Spanish is the most sought-after language by American employers. A minor in Spanish can give you a professional edge in any field, help you to communicate with member of the community, and complements a variety of degrees, from nursing and film to engineering and criminal justice. Courses and certificates associated with Languages for Cybersecurity, Spanish for the Professions, or Translation and Interpretation can advance your career goals and help you in other areas of academic interest and personal growth. 


Focus of Study

The Spanish Minor program aims to develop advanced proficiency in Spanish through comprehensive coursework encompassing language, literature, and culture. Students complete core courses in intermediate and advanced Spanish, Hispanic literature, and choose electives like  Spanish for professions, contemporary cinema, or Latino literature. A capstone seminar allows in-depth knowledge on a selected topic. The program encourages study abroad for cultural immersion and career readiness in fields such as education, international business, and translation.


Program requirements

The minor in Spanish requires a total of 21 credit hours in Spanish beyond SPAN 2110, including the following minimum distribution:

  • SPAN 2120 - Intermediate Spanish II or equivalency
  • SPAN 3000 - Spanish Grammar and Composition or equivalency
  • SPAN 3010 - Advanced Spanish Conversation and Composition or equivalency
  • Complete 12 additional hours of SPAN elective courses. Students entering at the 3000 level may elect to take these 4 courses in upper-division grammar/language or literature.
