Spanish is one of the most spoken languages in the world. It is spoken as a first language by about 352 million people, or by 417 million including non-native speakers (according to 1999 estimates). In the United States, Spanish is fast becoming second to English in usage. A language of practical utility, great literature and wide applicability Spanish is becoming a necessary skill for dealing with today’s world. A major in Spanish, coupled with a major or minor in another discipline, can open a wide variety of doors for all students. During your education, it might be a wise idea to travel to a foreign country or study abroad in international exchange programs to learn more about the culture. Volunteering language skills to community organizations, churches, or programs that work with people who speak your target language can also be very beneficial.
