An introduction to classical Attic Greek for students with no previous knowledge of Greek. Acquisition of the fundamentals of grammar, vocabulary, syntax and morphology will be emphasized as a means to understanding Greek thought and culture.

More complex grammar and morphology concepts are presented and reviews incorporated. Reading selections are from Herodotus and Thucydides. Completion of this course meets the ancient language requirement for a Classics minor and the prerequisite for studying the Septuagint (Old Testament) and New Testament in Koine Greek. It also meets the Core language requirement for most majors. Prer., GRK 1010 or equivalent.

And introduction to Koine Greek, also known as Hellenistic or Biblical Greek, for students with no previous knowledge of Greek. Focus is on New Testament vocabulary, grammar, and morphology.

The course continues and completes the advanced grammar, syntax, and morphology necessary to read the New Testament, early Christian literature, secular Hellenistic literature, and the Septuagint. The successful completion of these courses meets the ancient language requirement for a Classics minor and the Core language requirement for most majors. Prer., GRK 1100 or equivalent.

Completion of advanced grammar and morphology concepts while reinforcing previous lessons. Reading selections are from Herodotus, Thucydides, and Aristophanes. Completion of this course meets the requirements for any further Greek courses. Prer., GRK 1020 or equivalent.

Readings from selected texts in Greek such as Plato, Lysias, the New Testament, Homer, or a Greek tragedy. Grammar review is incorporated. Prer., GRK 3010 or equivalent.

For undergraduates. May be offered to meet specific student needs. May be repeated up to three times for credit. Prer., Instructor consent required.

An introduction to Latin grammar, literature, and culture for those with no previous experience in the language. Readings are adaptations from Livy, Vergil, Catullus, Julius Caesar, Terence, and Cicero

Continued study of Latin grammar, literature, and culture. Latin readings are adaptations from Horace, Ovid, Seneca, Pliny Minor, Augustine, and Boethius. Prer., LAT 1010 or equivalent.

More advanced grammar and syntax. Reading selections are less adapted and from Bede, Einhard, Heloise to Abelard, William of Tyre, Valla, and Erasmus. Prer., LAT 1020 or equivalent.

Completion of advanced grammar concepts with review incorporated. Reading selections are from Thomas Moore, Juan Gines de Sepulveda, Copernicus, Kepler, Holberg, and other authors such as Julius Caesar, Ovid, Geoffrey of Monmouth, or Catullus. Prer., LAT 2110 or equivalent.

• 4 Credits

Drawing on a basis in Golden Age Roman literature, the course will explore oratory, epic poetry and epistolary style, Latin prose and poetry by classical Roman authors such as Cicero, Virgil, and Ovid. Prer., LAT 2120 or equivalent. Meets with FCS 3650.

Selected topics in Latin. May be offered to meet specific student needs. May be repeated up to three times for credit. Prer., Consent of instructor.
